Thursday morning the Oakland Raiders officially confirmed the signing of running back Rashad Jennings and safety Reggie Smith, these moves were first reported on twitter the following day.

Smith played in 45 games with the San Francisco 49ers from 2008-2011. He eventually signed last season with the Carolina Panthers but failed to make it past training camp and prior to the start of the season he was eventually released.

On the Raiders, Smith will be competing for playing time at safety, and special teams.Tyvon Branch is a virtual lock at strong safety and the recent signing of free safety Usama Young will most likely get the opportunity to start at that position. But he is not Michael Huff by any means and the Raiders will be searching for someone to shine. The Raiders also may draft a late round safety to compete with the ones they have already on their roster.

At running back there is no doubt Darren McFadden will receive most of the snaps but he needs a back-up Mike Goodson is on the other side of the country with the New York Jets. Jennings will most likely take over where Goodson left off last season.

Jennings, spent his first two NFL seasons with the Jaguars as a backup for Maurice Jones-Drew and  an opportunity to start last season with the injury to Jones Drew.

In the six games he started  for the Jaguars in 2012 Jennings averaged 2.8 yards per carry and had  two touchdowns. In three-year career he has averaged 4.2 yards per carry with a total of 944 yards and seven touchdowns.

The advantage for Jennings is his familiarity with the new Raiders offensive coordinator Greg Olson, who was the quarterbacks coach last season.
